Introduction to Working With Cultural Difference

This 2 day course provides participants with the ability to communicate and work effectively across cultures with a focus on working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and cultures.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

1. Explore fundamental areas of cultural difference in core values between their own and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultures and formulate strategies to accommodate these differences

2. Develop knowledge of important differences in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and Anglo-Australian manners, communication style and protocols of sensitive communication

3. Identify potential areas of miscommunication and how to address them

4. Discuss reasons why Anglo-Australian & Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander perspectives of contact history are so fundamentally different & outline the major historical periods and landmarks in our shared history
